CHARLESTON, WV – The 2007 West Virginia Legislature adjourned sine die Saturday, March 10th at Midnight. With much of their controversial legislation either dead or already passed in the 59 prior days, the Legislature remained steady working to complete all final legislation until the final gavel sounded. In all, 274 Legislative Bills were passed during the sixty day session. Sixteen Bills have been signed (or approved) by the Governor.

While the Legislature is in session the Governor has 5 days to approve or veto a

bill he receives. After the Legislature adjourns, the Governor has 15 days to act on Legislation he has received. If the Governor does not act on Legislation within these time frames the Bill automatically becomes law.

The Legislature is currently in a Special Session called by the Governor, commonly referred to as “Budget Week”. During the next 5 to 7 days the Senate and the House will work out differences in the Budget Bill. The Governor might also add other legislation that he has vetoed due to technicalities in the drafting of such bills.

Once the Budget bill is approved and the Legislature adjourns they will set Interim meeting dates each month. Topics of these meetings will be determined by the many study resolutions that were adopted by both bodies of the Legislature. Other topics can be added by the Senate President or the Speaker of the House. These Interim meetings are held over a 3 day period of each month throughout the year.
